Does Vettel's

Sebastian Vettel has got his mojo back and and his debut podium for Aston Martin at the 2021 Azerbaijan GP proves just that. In what will go down as an all time classic, this year's race in Baku kept us on the edge of our seats from start to finish and it did not disappoint. One driver to was in contention all the way through and drove exceptionally well was Vettel. But it wasn't just this race that had us impressed. We break down how Vettel's form has steadily improved since Bahrain and how this uptick in form will help Aston Martin in a narrow fight for 5th in the championship. We'll also look at the keys to Vettel's Azerbaijan Grand Prix success and how this was a vintage Vettel performance.

Let us know in the comments what you thought of the video and Vettel's drive in Baku!

Can't go wrong with a four time World Champion when you you want the best to develop a new team. Rules in F1 keep changing enough so anything is possible, more podiums are down the road for him & Lance. They have a car good enough on some days to challenge for a podium! Cheers

Honestly, I hated Vettel when he was at Red Bull. The Finger Boy. Started to support him when he joined Ferrari. Yes, he did make some mistakes but in the end, it was Ferrari that failed to deliver at the end of the day. When friction started to develop between him and the management, I knew it was going to be very difficult. The two most unforgettable things in 2020 was his third place in Istanbul and his farewell song to Ferrari. And in Azerbaijan, Vettel finally ended up where he deserved and his conversation with his race engineer, the media personnel who interviewed him (who gave you my number?) and his infectious laughter really made up day. Hope to see more of that.

Vettel's rapid in qualifying he's so quality he can manufacture 0.150 all by himself he's so quick probably one of the quickest in formula 1 on a hot lap so qualifying for him won't be a problem. But seeing him getting a fine tune out of that care in races just tells u how good seb is both of his last races is coz he made the overcut work & others didn't & gained track position which is down to his sheer brilliance. Seb is back literally & tbh AM suit him like a glove!! Small team, good spirits, family environment no dirty politics it just all suits seb.

Being able to start the race on fresh softs was the key here. It was sort of a happenstance strategy that paid off huge. Had he made to Q3, he likely would've started in the 8-10 range, stopped early with the rest of the top 10 cars, and finished around 5th IMO. Still a good sign either way

And another point in Seb's favor: there's a lot of overtakes in Baku, so track position alone isn't enough, like in Monaco. Vettel was pretty fast, he managed to be faster than Lewis at some point and the leaders weren't pulling away from him. As said in the video, podiums shouldn't be frequent for Aston Martin, they're closer to a lower midfield team, but I believe that Seb will maximise the potential of his car and put himself in the right place, if an amazing opportunity like that in Azerbaijan appears again.

To be honest, would you be confident in a team where noone has your back? Where the car is just utter garbage? When people are always slapping your face telling you youre not good anymore? You should be rather amazed by how Vettel got through this, how he endured all of the stuff he had to go through in Ferrari. Let's remind ourselves that Ferrari had to cheat, to compete with Mercedes. That alone shows what a trashcan the car really was. If you're a real fan you cheer through good and bad times. But all i can see is people blaming and flaming Vettel when things go wrong, and cheering for him when things like Baku happen. Hypocrites, that's all you are.

Crazy how the safety car at this track saw massive errors from Seb in '17 and '18 but this year, helped him to improve an already impressive result. He seems to ENJOY being in F1 and just driving. I just hope that when he finally fights for another title (hopefully as soon as next year), he will have learnt from his past mistakes at Ferrari and drive without letting the pressure get to him (then again, he's older and wiser so hopefully will have learnt by then). Rather than Sebastian's abilities, I am slightly nervous about how well Lance might be able to support Sebastian in a title challenge as a 2nd driver and if he can do so consistently because if not, family ties aside, Lawrence has to consider the fact that it's more important for Aston martin to have a champion rather than his son getting a few race wins

George subbed and almost won the race in that Mercedes car, just when the team bungled the pitstop and lost that race. Point is, it's all about the car, and the pact he has signed with the devil to commit mistakes( Imola) or car breaking down for half a lap and still able to cross the finish line. On the other hand the law of averages hit his title competitors at the most inopportune moment like Vettel at Silverstone, Verstappen this weekend. When he was driving in the midfield McLaren during 2010-2012, all he had to show was midfield crashes where he was rear ending Massa and Kobayashi. It's just the British folks in Brackley protecting his brand and their own jobs in doing so.

I'll give Lawrence Stroll some credit for being passionate about motorsports and cars. Otmar Szafnauer is also a very experienced and competent team boss lately as well. Monaco and Baku are very good examples of executing very good strategies from AMR. If they can manage to build a very good car for 2022, maybe Aston Martin could do great. Honestly anything can happen in 2022 and we might even get a completely different running order with new aero, wind tunnel testing limits and budget caps in effect.

The Ferrari car and the Ferrari team was toxic to Vettel's talent...Vettel wasn't alone responsible for falling from stardom...after the 2014 regulations Red Bull could not keep up with Mercedes and other manufacturers...but from the Start Ferrari was arrogant and pressured Vettel too fast to win against Mercedes, while Hamilton's car was steadily better than either Ferrari while I have doubts that of the two Ferrari's Vettel was the lesser vs. Leclerk's...that is my sincere belief...Let's hope Aston Martin team will have the patience, fine tune their car to be compatible with Hamilton's Mercedes and better than Red Bull's Honda because that car is a beast...and then in 2022 the new Aston Martin will be perfected to the needed level to win championships...I'm confident that Vettel is still in the top three divers of the F1 category.

He's the most intelligent driver on the grid..... you can't keep a driver with intelligence down. What stood out for me was the red flag period where while others where out of their cars, he was in his car staying focussed and in the zone, that is the frist time I saw this level of determination since the late great Ayrton Senna. So, yes in Baku and in Monaco, the drives of Seb were very much a Senna-like drive and in 2021 and Senna like mentality. This is what Aston is doing what Ferrari couldn't... What I always found in Ferrari that they were very engineer focused rather than driver focus, such was the case with Alonso and such was the case with Seb. And Aston on the other hand is focusing on their drivers and giving not the cars which engineers want rather giving cars that drivers want. I always said Seb was drving the Ferrari beyond the limit and incurring mistakes and spinning since 2018. Well, it turned out to be true. It's such a beautiful thing to see Seb driving in his element and getting back to his mould. After all he won in Monza in Torro Rosso on merit, first driver to win in Red Bull, youngest World Champion, the first driver to beat Mercedes in hybrid era on merit (Malaysia), first driver to lead the championship against mercedes in hybrid era on merit. So, he's many of the firsts. Thank you Aston and Thank you Strolls for bring Aston to F1 and Seb to Aston.

I'm not saying the young guns are worse drivers, far from it, all i'm saying is Max, Charles and whomever else need to prove themselves. It's one thing to be fast, to be an amazing driver, a pure talent, it's another thing to win. And Vettel and Hamilton are winners. they are born winners.

as I agree with you, I would add there max. I've never been his fan (especially after his collisions with Seb in 2018,china for example) but the last 2 years, boy did he prove me that he is on the world championship level right now and I'm happy i am able to see Hamilton struggling under pressure like never

Im not so sure about that, especially when Leclerc is a driver who is famous for his strong mental fortitude.

Since his 4-year title run with Red Bull, Seb has always been a confidence driver. When he’s been happy and things going well, he’s performed well. When times have been hard (cough… Ferrari troubles…) he’s made mistakes, been off the pace and his head hadn’t been really in the game. I might be a Lewis fan, but I’m also a big Seb fan too, so I hope this new-found enthusiasm and drive continues as it’ll be sure to score him a ton of points.

I don't think F1 drivers ever lose the speed, but rather lose the need.

"Vettel leading a F1 race again was a great sight to see." Everyone(when he was winning 9 races in a row & defeating 3 other greatest drivers & still winning every championship): BOOOO BOOOOO. LOL I hate F1 fans so much sometimes.

He’s only got a bit lucky with retirements to finish so high, he still did well to get to p4 I suppose but here and Monaco it’s too early to say

@astonmartinvettel astonmartinseb I'm talking about this season. Vettel isn't getting on the podium this season purely on merit. He'll need luck as well. Has he been unlucky in other seasons compared to Lewis? Yeah, but that's irrelevant to this season.

@Rezoan Alom i want you to watch singapore 2017 where not even the luck but even the god was with lewis the day that vettel lost 2017 championship thank to verstappen so dont say vettel is lucky if you want i can tell you many more examples of lewis"s luck germany 2018 out of nowhere front wing damage of vettel and retirement of vettel and again lewis won the race

@Rezoan Alom yeah they had a good strategy to get to p4 but it’s still hard to say if he’s back to the old vettel after the last 2 races. Both good strategy calls, let’s see on a normal track

He was P4 on merit. That Aston was probably the 5th or 6th fastest car, so it would have been basically impossible for him to get on the podium purely on merit. If luck wasn't a thing, you'd see exclusively Red Bulls and Mercedes on the podium.
